In 2001 Sara Turetta answered the desperate call of an Italian family living in Cernavoda: a little local association was trying, with very little success, to cope with the massacre that was going on. In fact, in 2001 the city streets were full of dead bodies and hundreds of strays were poisoned out of the local authorities’ will. Once in Cernavoda, we realized we could successfully deal with the City Hall. So we quickly found an agreement: in exchange for our neutering & spaying activity, they’d have stopped killing the strays. If the relationship with the local authorities has improved, the relationship with the local association has, on the other end, got worse and they’ve refused the presence of a supervisor who was going to run the shelter under the medical and financial profile. Therefore we chose to have a base of our own, a reception structure we could run in a ‘western way‘, making sure that it was going to be clean, hygienical, ordered and with a clear hierarchy. Not only we spay and neuter stray dogs and cats that have owners, but we also provide free vet assistance to all the poor families’ animals, which in this area are so many, and we devote ourselves everyday to first aid interventions.
