On December 31st one of our supporters contacted us to inform us that she had seen two bears in Albania, kept under horrible conditions.
Despite the fact that Albania is not a country in which STD normally operates, we decided to do everything in our power to help the two poor animals, that have been enclosed in these two rusty cages for two years. The STD supporter found out that the animals’ owner, an Albanian restaurateur, had bought the bears from two gypsies in order to attract clients. The two bears (that you see in the photo) are kept along the road just after the City of Fier, in the south of the Country. Currently we are in working with our contact in Tirana, gathering information on Albanian laws in order to understand how we can intervene and provide assistance to these animals. We have also informed Wspa (of which STD is a member) in the hopes that the British organization can provide us with the assistance necessary to rescue the animals.
We will keep you informed via our website as to the developments in this story. Since we still don’t know if it will be possible to seize and relocate the animals, we have decided to wait to begin a fundraising campaign until we know whether or not we’ll be able to intervene in Albania.

CIAO DANIELA,SONO STATA IN ALBANIA PIU’ VOLTE (DAL 2000 AL 2007) E TI POSSO ASSICURARE CHE I CAVALLI E GLI ASINI,CANI E GATTI NON VENGONO ASSOLUTAMENTE MALTRATTATI.HANNO FIENO A VOLONTA’SONO SEMPRE TENUTI ALL’OMBRA ecc…. é inconcepibile e da b@stardi,dovrebbe pagare il ristoratore,non guadagnar sulla pelle di quest due poveri orsi..mio dio che pena che fanno,spaccano il cuore,come puo’la legge e chi vive li esser indifferente alla sofferenza dei poveretti orsi,ma lo si vede ad occhio nudo che stanno malissimo,poi di una stazza così non possono ne muoversi ne girarsi..è una vergogna..ora li pubblico nel mio blog perchè la gente deve sapere che schifo di governo c’è in albania..sto piangendo dai nervi!!

I have been to Albania and seen the high number of stray cats and dogs living with dreadful conditions.Were you able to help these bears and get them released? Is this a common thing in Albania to keep bears in cages? They way many Albanians treat the animals is appauling. Did wspa help? Thank you
