Once arrived on the scene, the diagnosis was immediate: terminal stage of tetanus. Our Medgidia staff had been called earlier by some people who had noticed the poor animal’s convulsions and its moaning, among the general indifference of bystanders. No trace of the presumed owner. As soon as euthanasia procedures were started, in the presence of the medical officer of the Local Health Authority Unit (ASL), an individual claiming to be the owner of the animal, suddenly appeared voicing his opposition: he would personally slaughter it (cut the animal’s throat) and make use of the meat. The ASL medical officer sharply disagreed and allowed our staff to proceed with administering euthanasia. The situation was monitored until the carcass was removed by the municipal waste management services, in order to avoid scavenging by the neighbourhood folks.
