On April 19, three members of the European Parliament, on behalf of the association Pets in Europe of which STD is an active member, put together Written Declaration 26/2010. On the contrary to what citizens of the European Union and many of our supporters think, the Parliament has never legislated on topics that concern pets, except for the transportation of dogs, cats and ferrets (Regulation 998/2003).
The European agreement (Strasburg 1987) ratified by the majority of the EU members, permits single countries to have a high degree of self- governance of political strategies related to animal protection, in spite of the fact that a series of important guidelines have been identified. This is why Declaration 26/2010 represents a very important milestone: the first essential step in order to present concrete legislation proposals to the European Parliament concerning the problem of stray-dogs. Although the topic is not explicitly mentioned, and there are only references to the traffic of puppies and to the direct sanitary consequences, if the declaration were to be approved, STD will follow the Parliament’s work constantly and will try together with PIE to make sure that intense sterilization and vaccination of stray animals becomes the most used European method to face the problem.
Save the Dogs urges all of its foreign partners to send letters to their MEPs by 9th September, the date of the last plenary session of the European Parliament.
We will keep you updated on the campaign on our website.
