9 OCTOBER: FIRST 20 KENNELS TO THE DOGS IN CALARASI

09.10.2006 | Filed Under 2006-2007 | No Comments

As our supporters can see from these pictures, something is slowly changing in Calarasi. Even if we are facing many troubles with the President of the organisation Sufletel, (who refuses to apply some fundamental sanitary rules), we decided to keep up our work. Beside the 20 kennels delivered today (worth 520 euros plus transport costs from Bucarest to Calarasi, 150 euros), we have distributed 300 kg of dry food and we started vaccinating all the dogs of the shelter. Today the italian voluntaries from Unisvet, together with the Romanian team of our mobile clinic, have neutered some females, treated dozens of sick dogs and provided surgery to a stray hit by a car. Many of the dogs getting assistance are visibly improving. Next week we are going to take to Calarasi 50 pallets to allow the dogs to sleep on wood and not on the cold, concrete floor. Even if there are these improvements, there are still many unsolved problems related to the bad managing of the shelter, especially because of the uncontrolled entering of new, healthy dogs. We will keep you updated.

CALARASI, A MONTH AFTER (SEPTEMBER 2006)

20.09.2006 | Filed Under 2006-2007 | No Comments

What we have done (15th August-15 September)

  • 50 sterilizations (priority: pregnant females)
  • 150 dogs treated with Ivomec (against the scab) and big amounts of vitamins;
  • Euthanasia for dogs afflicted with incurable diseases;
  • Material’s purchase for an amount of about 1000 Euro (small quantities bought weekly) to build shelters and roofing for the dogs.
  • 15 puppies relieved from the parasitic worms and from the external parasitic;
  • 3 dogs of a small size brought to Cernavoda for adoption.

IMMEDIATE PROJECTS

  • we will select DIRECTLY two new workmen.
  • we just order first 300 kg of dry food per week, for a total amount of about 600 Euro (1 kg = 0,50 cents).
  • the big pen for the ill dogs will be dismantled. We bought enough material to build three smaller pens that will make easier the therapy for these dogs and potentially make them social. We already paid the manpower for the building of new pens.
  • We already ordered to Bucharest the first 15 triangle and wooden doghouses for one of the new pens. The next 30 will be ordered in a second time, as soon as the works will be advanced.
  • We are looking for a palletts for free around the companies of the area.
  • We bought 150 chips (value of 450 Euro) to take a census of the guests of the cannel and to avoid that the society bring in the structure other dogs, and it is already happening.
  • We postponed the purchase of the car waiting to sign an agreement and to verify the rule’s respect from Sufletel. We don’t want to repeat the mistakes done in 2001-2002 with Spike Society in Cernavoda.

Pics of this section concerned the last Friday, during our weekly visit to the structure. They show the food given to the dogs (rotten bread and offal), prohibitive hygienic conditions of the cannel and the difficulties of the dogs capture that are to be treated.

We are thankful to everybody that has send their donations in favor of Calarasi. We are doing our best to change this place in a cannel of acceptable standards but much depends unfortunately from the cooperation with Sufletel society, that doesn’t share 100% our strategy and that shows to be reluctant respecting rules fit by our doctors.

AUGUST 2006 - THE DRAMATIC SITUATION OF THE CALARASI KENNEL

28.08.2006 | Filed Under 2006-2007 | No Comments

We could not believe our eyes when last 8 August we entered the Sufletel kennel. What was meant to be an inspection to eventually spend some days there with our mobile clinic became an emergency for our project. We found an alarming situation, perhaps the saddest and worst of all among those faced over these past 4 years. 230 dogs were kept there in miserable conditions owing to lack of funds or lack of management skills. 100 dogs were severely or terminally ill owing to severe skin diseases.

9 - 11 AUGUST 2006

4 vets from Unisvet, 3 volunteers from Save the Dogs and a worker from the Cernavoda kennel spent 3 days, working intensely for 10 hours a day, at the Calarasi kennel

Unfortunately, some dogs were in such poor health conditions that they had to be euthanized. In particular, our team recalls with great sadness two dogs affected by a severe ascites which had caused much suffering to the poor animals and could not be healed.

All the pets had a worming and flea treatment. About 100 dogs were treated with Ivomec (ivermectin) against mange. About 40 male dogs were neutered.

We bought material for an amount of 600 euros and set up a sanitary belt around the kennel (delimited by some metallic grids). We bought cement, shelter, wood and metallic pillars and a barrow.

We also met the Vice-mayor of the town, one of the authorities most open to dialogue and apparently willing to change the strategy set in place to control the problem of stray dogs in the town. We explained to the Vice-mayor that we are not able to run a third project but we offered him help to start a project similar to those run in Cernavoda and Medgidia.

The 4-5 tons of bones and corpses lying next to the kennel were removed by a bulldozer and disposed of. Unfortunately, despite a picture of our team was published on the first page of a local newspaper, the following day dog catchers were working full capacity in the city centre.

Special thanks go to the Unisvet vets who worked side by side for 3 long and sad days with the volunteers of STD. We feel indebted to Luca, Sveva, Monica and Marcello for their hard work and professionalism and their emotional involvement and logistic support.
