Adoptions at distance represent since many years a consolidated modality through which non-profit organisations (humanitarian but also animalist and environmentalist ones) support their own projects all over the world. It is a direct and effective way to involve the supporters and to let them feel nearer to their beneficiaries, whether we are talking about children, forests or quadrupeds.

Taking into account the huge success of adoptions at distance, the Italian Agency for non-profit organizations recently announced the publication of some guidelines aimed at protecting donors, in order to guarantee the transparency that in the past, in some cases, was missing.

This page of our web site wants to introduce the different typologies of adoptions at distance proposed by STD to its supporters and it highlights the differences among them.

ADOPTION AT DISTANCE OF A DOG

In the shelters of Cernavoda and Medgidia, STD hosts a permanent number of about 450-550 stray dogs. Even if about fifty lucky dogs leave for a foreign country each month, they are immediately replaced by other urgent cases present on the territory or by the animals that are abandoned in front of our structures every day. At this fix number it is necessary to add the dogs (and the cats) in transit to be sterilised, treated and vaccinated: about 80 animals in Cernavoda and 40 in Medgidia. It is easy to make the sum: every day STD has to feed about 600 animals.

The contribution of 10 euros per month, which is requested to those who decide to adopt a dog at distance, represents a symbolic figure: it is obvious that STD has to equally sustain all the animals it takes care of, but it would be impossible to photograph and to follow, during their path, all the 600 dogs that transit in our structures. Therefore, a group of quadrupeds that, for several reasons, is designated to remain for a longer time in our shelter is selected and the person who makes an adoption at distance receives the photo and an update of the state of health. This can be granted, for organisational reasons of the association, not more than one time in a year.

ADOPTION AT DISTANCE OF A FAMILY WITH ANIMALS

In spite of the atrocities that every day happen in the streets and in the property courtyards of Romania, in this country there are also good-hearted people that love dogs and cats like us. To these persons, often very poor and old, STD dedicated a programme of adoption at distance, which consists of a contribution of 25 euros per month.

In this case, a fix quantitative of food, depending on the number of possessed animals, and free veterinary assistance are granted to the family. If the family has more than one sponsor at distance, funds are diverted to the hundreds of cases that reach our clinics in Romania: many people, in fact, do not have the possibility of paying the veterinary services that STD supplies and, to assist in any case the animals of these needy people, the association treat them at its own expenses, with a huge economic effort. There are not ambulatory or veterinary clinics 80-60 km away from Cernavoda and Medgidia.

ADOPTION AT DISTANCE OF A HORSE

(Ph. Alessio Mesiano)

In these years STD has rescued and taken into custody about 15 horses, seriously mistreated or destined to the butchering. Unfortunately the available spaces of the association for the moment do not let us increase this number, but STD assists many working horses (especially those possessed by the Rom community) for free. At these horses we need to add those that are victims of road accidents and for whom the intervention of STD represents the interruption of serious pains.

The contribution of 30 euros per month of the people that adopt a horse at distance is used to maintain our horses, but also to cover the medical expenses that STD faces during the year in order to relief the pains of the horses that still work in the streets of Romania.
