IOSIF AND HIS PETS WISH TO THANK ITALY

One of our Romanian voluntary workers carried a first batch of food aid to Iosif for him and his pets. In addition to the dry food for his 3 stray dogs, thanks to an STD supporter we were also able to buy some food for Iosif.’ Iosif’ is currently unemployed in Calarasi and we are hoping to offer him a job at the future STD shelter. He wishes to thank all the people that were moved from his story and helped him.

BUCHAREST: DOG TAKEN AWAY FROM CRUEL OWNER

A friend of Iuliana’s, our veterinarian in Bucharest, spotted the dog in a courtyard on the outskirts of the city. The dog in the photo had been kept on a chain from the time it was two months old and the chain was never adjusted for size as the dog grew. Result: as is the case with many dogs owned in Romania, the chain penetrated the dog’s skin and eventually became an integral part of the dog’s body. The poor animal, frightened and sad, was fed only a morsel of bread each day. Iuliana’s friend managed to distract and “catch” the dog and Iuliana has offered to look after the dog until STD finds it a new family. Iosif, the unemployed man from Calarasi that takes care of three dogs, has been immediately sponsorshiped by a friend of STD. Many thanks to Sara M. for her important contribution.

GRAVE CASE OF ANIMAL CRUELTY IN CERNAVODA

Today a 6 year-old girl came to the clinic in tears, holding in her arms her dying puppy. The poor animal had been violently slammed up against a wall by a man who lives in the same neighbourhood as the young girl. Unfortunately, nothing could be done to save the animal, which was euthanized immediately. The puppy had been adopted by the little girl only the day before. The puppy had been vaccinated and dewormed by STD which had also taken in the other puppies from the litter and spayed the mother (privately owned).STD contacted the Cernavoda Police but despite the many testimonies who witnessed the brutal act, nobody came forward to make an official statement for fear of reprisal. It will be difficult to bring to justice the man responsible for the crime.

However, STD is considering legal action against him. The man, a previous offender, is known to be a violent person. His wife, upon learning of the accusations against her husband, commented “All this fuss over a dog?”.

His name is Iosif and he is 50 years old. Since he lost the right to the apartment that had been allocated to him by the steel plant where he worked in Calarasi, he has been living in a closet-sized room with a modest rent. In addition to the two puppies shown in the photo, Iosif has also adopted an adult stray dog. While we wait to begin working in Calarasi (we should begin in the fall, if the city council manages to complete the clinic within the expected time period), we have decided to help Iosif by adopting him and his dogs at a distance. Anyone interested in donating the money necessary to feed Iosif’s dogs each month (20 euros for 24kg of nuggets bought locally), can contact us via e-mail at adozioni@savethedogs.it .

Until May the 9th, on Radio Monte Carlo and Radio 105 the new STD spots

The new Save the Dogs radio campaign will be on air from April 20th till May 9th. The two spots have been created by copywriter Vincenzo Celli and recorded by Alessandra Hazan’s beautiful voice. Radio 105 and Radio Montecarlo, that have donated the space to STD, will broadcast the spots 7 times a day. We herewith would like to thank the owner of the two Radios, Vincenzo, the technicians and all who helped to realize this project.

NOTHING LEFT EXCEPT FOR HIS DOGS’ AFFECTION

’ This man wandering from dustbin to dustbin is one of the many unemployed people from Calarasi. After the town steelworks shut down (it has now been acquired by a major Italian Group), he was left with nothing. But in his loneliness he found two loyal friends: two pets he picked from the street which follow him in his search for recyclable materials. To prevent dog-catchers from taking them away, he had them vaccinated and carries their vaccination cards. For the dogs of Calarasi and for this animal-loving friend, we hope we will soon be able to start a spaying/neutering programme in this town. He will be one of our first new employees.
