Tomorrow morning the President of STD in Romania, Laurentiu Vasilescu, will meet with the Mayor of Calarasi, Nicolae Dragu, in a final attempt to save the dogs of this city. Today Laurentiu will be in Calarasi to evalutate the situation at the Sufletel shelter, in an attempt to prevent the manager of the shelter/concentration camp from further increasing his absurd financial demands in exchange for handing the structure over to us. Given that the 5 x 1000 funds granted by the Italian government to non-profits have not yet arrived (and no one knows when they will be paid to the Italian onlus associations), STD is urgently seeking funding in order to begin operations in this city. Approximately 30/40,000 euros are needed to maintain the shelter and launch the spaying/neutering plan.

Not even the new law on the protection of animals has managed to stop Calarasi’s administrative officials. As a matter of fact, today the horrible and lawless capture and killing of the stray dogs was resumed. STD has requested an urgent meeting with the Mayor. We will propose to him that we take over the management of the shelter on condition that he immediately put a stop to the killings and uphold the agreements previously made. We will keep you informed of developments via the website.

After a year of putting pressure on the City’s administration, STD has succeeded: in the City of Medgidia’s 2008, budget funds have been earmarked for the construction of a shelter with an attached veterinary clinic. Around 70,000 euros will be needed to build a small but modern structure, based on a plan that will be presented by STD. The management of the clinic and shelter will be given, according to agreements made, to our Association, with a partnership agreement that includes a financial obligation on STD’s part, that will cover 50% of the expenses. The site has already been chosen (a plot of land located on the periphery of the City, close to the national road that leads to Costanza) but there are still many bureaucratic steps to be taken. Therefore, we cannot provide you with a precise time frame for the completion of the whole project, but the approval of the amount in the budget represents a first success and an important sign on the City’s part, that has acknowledged the necessity to build a structure and also to dedicate important resources to animals. We remind everyone that currently in Medgidia STD is working in a space that is absolutely inadequate, an ex-slaughterhouse where the work conditions for the staff as well as the conditions for the animals “in-transit” are very difficult. It is a temporary accommodation that allows for the spaying/neutering and treatment thousands of animals that otherwise would die without us.

The last month we gave the news about two bears closed in narrow cages at Fier , in Albania (http://www.savethedogs.eu/?p=1450).
After seeing the tragic photos, STD has immediately contacted some of the associations which could sustain the joint action to release the two animals. We have brought the detailed story to WSPA‘s attention which has contacted a local association , Transborder Wildlife . This one prepares an exactly report about the situation of all the bears closed in the mini-zoo from all the country.

The menagerie where the poor animals are kept

We have been informed that : 1) in Albania there is no law for the protection of the wild animals ( and probably also for the pets) ; 2)the bears in this situation are dozen and dozen and these two were already known to the association; 3) in the nearest reserve ,which belongs to association Arktouros, in Macedonia ,where they could be put up, there is no more place.
Wspa asked us to do no action like ransom or improve their life’s conditions ,but wait to see the final report of Transborder Wildlife and the result of their legal measures.
Despite the fact that STD is a Wspa member and despite the great esteem for the important English foundation, we try to find, anyway, the possibility to care about the two animals, founded in tragic conditions .But , without the local help and the support of an important organization with a great experience, STD will have, practically , no possibility to make the things go different. We keep you informed about eventually news.
