On 18th May just gone there were about forty of our four-legged friends accompanied by their owners at the annual celebration bringing together animals adopted in Sweden thanks to Hundjalpen.
Inspite of the inclement climate, those who had adopted dogs spent several hours in the company of volunteers such as Linda West (the president of the association) and Sara Turetta who flew to Stockholm the day before with another 5 lucky ex-strays. To view photos click here.
Everybody knows that the electoral campaign is a moment in which all citizens’ complaints must get an answer.
The result was that stray dogs have become one of the main reasons of complaining of the citizens of Medgidia, where, despite of thousand neuterings, there are still many wanderings animals on the roads.
The reaction of the authorities came along soon: the town council of Medgidia has built in a mad rush some rusty fences in the courtyard of our small neutering centre, instead of fining, as per STD request, those who refuse to spay their dogs or who let them wander so that they could find some food by themselves.
STD opposed this initiative: nobody can pound in any dog in those rusty fences, full of’ sticking out iron tips, without a smooth surface and with a small area available. In the meantime, there’ is a decision lying inside a drawer which they allocate 70.000 euros with, to build a new clinic with a shelter next to it, while all the supplying to STD (detergents and some bags of fodder) have been interrupted.

Three months after our admittance in the ex dog pound in Sufletel, yesterday 15th May 2008 the shelter was officially introduced to the press and to local authorities. Once the heaps of rubble, animals remains and a lot of rubbish had been cleaned away, with its 200 finally healthy “guests”, the dog pound made a very positive impression on all the visitors. Luigi Estero, italian Vice Ambassador in Romania, the Under- Secretary of Agricolture Dr. Nedelcu (already head of the veterinari service in the province of Calarasi) and the mayor Mr Nicolae Dragu were also present.
