There are persistent rumours of’ silent night-time massacres around Bucharest Airport (Otopeni) to rid the area of stray dogs and cats before the Nato summit (2-6 April). STD is unable to verify the rumours, even if in the past the authorities have used drastic methods to make a city seem more western when big international events were scheduled. What STD can confirm is the intense activity of the dog-catchers’ observed by the President Sara Turetta in the area DN1 (the main road that leads to the airport) recently. Our association has frequently picked up stray dogs and cats from the airport, an area chosen by many Rumanians to abandon their puppies and kittens.

Despite STD’s presence in the town, today the mayor of Calarasi ordered the dog-catchers to round up and catch all the stray dogs in an area near a park, following a stray biting a citizen.
Save the Dogs is very angry about this order which does not take into consideration the law recently approved by the Rumanian Chamber of Deputies regarding the protection of animals.
We will keep you up to date with developments in the situation on our website.
A citizen of Medgidia saw him several times during the week. but we only managed to save this poor animal today, tortured by wire bands. The poor animal had hidden in the toilets of the town stadium. We had to put him to sleep and intervene with pincers and wire-cutters to free him from the wire that someone had intentionally put on his body. From the way in which the wire was fixed, we can exclude an accident. Click here to see all the photos of the operation (not suitable for sensitive viewers). If anyone would like to help us with the costs of curing the animal, you can make donations to this current account; even small ones are welcome.
