DARIO IS HEALING

Dario, the puppy rescued two weeks ago in Costanza with severe wounds on his neck, is recovering in our clinic. The poor animal has undergone surgery in order to remove the rope which had entered deeply his flesh, provoking a dangerous infection. Also Dario’s behaviour has changed significantly: he is more confident with human beings and we hope he will be soon rehomed in northern Europe.

TOSCA WILL FLY TO SWEDEN THIS FEBRUARY

The present we were all waiting for has arrived: our Tosca has been adopted, in record time, by a Swedish lady who lives near Stockholm. Tosca will be leaving in February, once all health formalities are completed. Thanks again to those who supported her treatment and, thanks to Hundhjalpen for the extraordinary adoptions it manages to promote!

ITALIAN AMBASSADOR VISITS CERNAVODA

Today, just three months after his appointment, the Italian Ambassador to Romania, Mario Cospito, visited STD’s clinic and the new shelter that is home to its donkeys for the first time. The Ambassador’s visit confirms the great attention with which Italian authorities follow STD’s initiatives in Romania–initiatives for which they have always shown their support at the institutional level.

FOUNDED AT CERNAVODA THE FIRST DONKEY SHELTER IN ROMANIA

The new shelter for donkeys inaugurated during the past few days in Cernavola is the result of the three year long collaboration between the Donkey Sanctuary and STD. The reserve, which took only 10 days to be completed by three British specialists supported by the local STD personnel, and earmarked to also host a new kennel in the future. The prefabricated stables, the fence and gates were delivered directly from the UK by an articulated lorry belonging to DS. The shelter (which will have a maximum capacity of 40 animals) comprises two stables of about 200 sq. m. each and two tool sheds. On Monday 10th November, the Romanian channel Happy Hour programme (17:45 local time). The shelter, as a matter of fact, is an absolute novelty for Romania, where abandoned or ill treated donkeys are a reality. Visit the donkeys section to view pictures of the building.

SLUMP IN DONATIONS, STD PROJECTS IN SERIOUS DIFFICULTY

Dramatic slump in donations during the months of September and October 2008. The national and International crises are having their effects also on the STD coffers which, during the past two months have’ recorded -70% of the usual offers. “We are extremely worried – declared STD President, Sara Turetta – and if this situation were to persist for another 2-3 months, we would be forced to shut down one of our projects in Romania and resize all others“. This is a tragic decision, which the association hopes could be avoided. “I ask all friends of STD to diffuse our work as widely as possible – concludes Sara Turetta – by circulating news of our activities amongst friends, colleagues and acquaintances. I am appealing to everyone to give our gadgets as Christmas gifts, thus also promoting and sustaining our commitment to the Romanian strays.

WOUNDED PUPPY FROM COSTANZA, PICKED-UP BY STD

The wounded puppy, that was reported to us from a supermarket parking lot in Costanza, has been captured with the help of an anaesthetic dart-gun. Once the puppy was taken to Cernavoda, the snare (not a wire as it had seemed at first) – which had penetrated the flesh and was causing much pain, besides a dangerous infection – was taken off.’ Dario (as it has been re-named) is terrified of people and will need time to regain his trust in humans and to recover from these few weeks of real torture. In the parking lot where he was found, there were at least another 30 stray dogs, among which a mother with her pup, both affected by mange. STD made a great effort to save these two and took them into the clinic, notwithstanding the severe overcrowding.
