The Romanian television stations reported on the gruesome episode which took place four days ago in the City of Costanza, located 60 kilometres from Cernavoda. A man, for unknown reasons, tied his dog to the back of his car and dragged him until killing him while his fellow townsmen stood by and watched. Unfortunately, in Romania it is common practice for owners to “punish” their dogs if they don’t act as good watchdogs or if they attack one of the owner’s chickens. STD doesn’t believe that the man responsible has been punished for this cruel act. Unfortunately, the new law on the protection of animals in Romania remains only words on paper that are not enforced.Watch the VIDEO.
After six years of work in the city, 7.000 neutering and hundreds od adoptions abroad, the shelter of Cernavoda seems to go through the worst period since its dawn. Every week, during the last 4 months, tens of dogs and cats have been abandoned: found along the roads, born in the courtyards of those who refuse the neuterings, abandoned by their heartless owners. The shelter (conceived for about 300 animals), hosts almost 500 animals. A real negative record. The detenction of Calarasi determined a lower number of departures abroad (about 50 from the beginning of this year), and the lack of cooperation by the majotity of the citizens in putting in serious trouble the project of STD in this city. Things are not going better in Calarasi, where burocracy is slackening the start of neutering very much (which need specific authorizations) and where abandoning is frequent.
Puppies in Calarasi
This time seems it was not the work of a human being, but really an accident, one of those “banal” events which cause every year the silent death of thousand stray dogs suffering down the roads of Romania.
A metallic wire twisted around the paw, a hook penetrating in the flesh: something that only pincers could have taken out. The dog in the picture was lucky: rescued by the team of Cernavoda, was calmed by and released by the wire which tortured him. After an antibiotic therapy (and the neutering, made by standard procedure) was released in his native pack in the city and got over completely.
