Paola in Medgidia with Valentina, one of our nurses.

I must tell you about this past week in Romania, but this time is not easy. So much has happened: many animals have suffered and my words are not enough to do them justice.

I have seen and caressed many happy dogs hosted at our shelters in Cernavoda and Medgidia and I found a couple of cats that will change my life… Little Mimi, found in front of the hospital in Cernavoda and little Bio, gathered beside the killing pound in Costanza. It is here where I lived the most intense day.

All happened suddenly: I don’t know what I thought when Sarah asked me if the next day I wanted to go to Costanza killing pound, to continue our investigation that began last July. I did’nt know what I’d found, but  Sara’s words were fundamental: do you want to see “real Romania”?

I struggled to sleep, scared by the idea of not waking up, and also because the tension was too much. At 5 and a half we left and at dawn we were near thepound. It did’nt take long to realize… the cries of the dogs could be heard distinctly, a thrill walked my back. Large tongs grippers dogs by the neck, lifted from the floor and close to the cage permit to a tasteless and despicable person to give them a painful death. No respect even for their death… death in this country has no sensitivity… dogs and cats killed by a car in the street, hung to trees, poisoned…

From that moment it was a succession of events: the arrival of the police, the first television stations, inspectors… the cries of the dogs still in my hears.

The injection of neurotoxic product into the lungs has destroyed in one hour the lives of 40 stray Romanian’s dogs, whose only crime is being born in a difficult and very little sensitivity country. Death is certainly their only view, there is no other way here… but that pain no, they do not deserved it. But here talking of respect, management of stray dogs in a respectful way is a myth. Maybe our evidence made the difference, or will be the turning point, but I can still hear the screams…. I have no more words and leave to the photos of my umpteenth trip to tell you the rest.

The animals that we save every day are so many, dogs and cats left in front of the shelter, found on the streets. Animals malnourished, sick and hungry… and we are constantly concerned that will not make it: the costs are huge and the new shelter is a project that still fails to realize… The new shelter would be really peace for all those tortured animals.
