THE DONKEY SHELTER: THE FIRST ONE AND THE ONLY ONE IN ROMANIA

Asini a Cernavoda - Donkeys in Cernavoda(Ph. Alessio Mesiano)

After three years of fruitful co-operation with our organization, the english foundation Donkey Sanctuary has decided to set-up, within STD grounds, the first Romanian shelter for donkeys. As a matter of fact, the grounds adjacent to our kennels were totally inadequate for our animals, while the number of abandoned donkeys in the province was growing alarmingly. Such an emergency (due to increased hay prices and precarious financial conditions of farmers) motivated the British foundation to invest in Romania, first and only east European country where DS has its own base. Two articulated lorries arrived from the UK in November (2008), carrying pre-fabricated stables, which were assembled in record time by a team of British carpenters. A third stable was built in September 2009.

Designed to provide maximum comfort to the animals, the two sheds are about 200 msq each are placed in a 20.000 msq property. Besides being provided with straw and hay, the donkeys also have the availability of automatically filled drinking troughs and tasty mineral salt “cubes” as diet supplements.
An STD vet visits the donkeys daily in order to check their health conditions, while DS experts make regular trips to train the staff and to verify standards.

STD plans to establish a reception area for school pupils and their families, so that their visits can facilitate their familiarization with the animals and teach them respect for animals.
