Combating the phenomenon of stray dogs on the Litorale Domizio coastline

Along with Puglia, Calabria and Sicily, the region of Campania is without doubt one of the most problematic areas of Italy with regard to the phenomenon of stray dogs and canine overpopulation.

The findings of the latest LAV Report 2019 (2018 data) speak for themselves :

  • 10,954 animals have been admitted to 31 dog pounds providing sanitary care
  • 9.6% of them were returned to their legitimate owners, while the rest went one of two ways: some were released in the territory they had come from after sterilization, while the vast majority ended up in dog pounds
  • the number of dogs present in these structures was 20,856, the highest in the whole of Italy
  • the total number of dogs officially registered on the canine registry is 759,743
  • the number of adoptions for this period was 6,138
  • sterilizations carried out by the veterinary services in Campania: 8,275
  • the cost per day for the administration of stray dogs is €72.000

This is the region chosen for the first Non Uno Di Troppo (Too Many Dogs) project financed by Save the Dogs.
