Spayathon 2018

Anna is asking for your help for the next “spayathons”. Will you support her?

Dear friends,

My name is Anna Kiss and I work as a veterinarian for the association Transylvania Animal Care. In these days I’m on a mission in Cernavoda, in Save the Dogs’ clinic, to sterilize as many animals as possible.

The reason why I’m doing it is because in my country the phenomenon of stray dogs is out of control and the dogs are being killed in public shelters. In Romania the lack of sterilization leads to the birth of thousands of dogs and cats destined to death after having known only suffering.

Each day Save the Dogs handles dozens of urgent cases. It’s impossible for the vets of the association to dedicate themselves continuously to a fundamental activity like this. Anna-kiss-foto-con-frase-lettera_engThis is why they asked us for help to organize the spayathons, real “marathons” during which we spay and neuter 100 animals every week.

Next spayathons are scheduled for the months of July, August and September but if we don’t gather the necessary funds we won’t be able to go ahead.

I am asking you, who know well Save the Dogs’ seriousness and professionalism, to help the animals in my country by donating for their sterilization.

I chose to become a veterinarian to alleviate animal suffering.
With all my heart, I hope you will want to help me.

Heartfelt thanks,
Anna Kiss

What are spayathons about?

They are real sterilization marathons involving the veterinarians of the Romanian association Transylvania Animal Care or foreign volunteer doctors who may be available at certain times of the year.

Our vet surgeons daily face emergencies and save lives in a constant race against time, as well as scrupulously preparing for departure dozens of animals going abroad. As long as Save the Dogs won’t enlarge its medical staff, it will be impossible for our veterinarians to engage in “intensive” sterilization actions.

Why are intensive sterilizations necessary?

Because in a context of endemic stray phenomenon like the Romanian one, sterilization is the only possibility to avoid suffering to thousands of animals and to effectively fight against the phenomenon. The uncontrolled reproduction leads to the birth of a huge number of dogs and cats whose fate is only a life of hardship and disease.

Each sterilized animal means 500 animals not born in the following 3 years, thus avoiding this terrible suffering.

Which animals do we sterilize?

Dogs and cats.
Both strays in the outlying areas of the city of Cernavoda and owned animals destined to end up on the streets.

Why do we sterilize owned animals for free?

Because the first cause of stray dogs phenomenon in Romania is the lack of sterilization of owned animals who – especially at night – are freed from courtyards and chains, with the possibility to freely reproduce. This happens despite the compulsory sterilization required by the Romanian law and the prohibition of owned roaming dogs. Widespread poverty and lack of veterinary facilities cause the non-application of the law.

It is not easy to convince people to sterilize their pet. Yet, when we succeeded in doing so, we also give them valuable information on “responsible pet detention” and often we convince them to use leashes and harnesses instead of improvised chains and collars.

In addition many families are grateful for our work: we are the only veterinary center between Bucharest and Constanta and an important reference point for those who care about their animals. Many of these people get to know us thanks to the spayathon.

Goals and costs of the spayathons

A sterilization costs us 30 euros and the goal of each spayathon is the sterilization of at least 100 animals (dogs and cats) per week, about 20 each day.
