_builder_version=&#8221;4.4.1&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.4.1&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>The story of Save the Dogs&#8217; first inspection of Calabria, where the number of stray dogs has reached alarming levels.<\/strong><br \/><strong>Seriously overcrowded pounds, abandoned and stray dogs<\/strong>: the number of stray dogs in Calabria has reached dramatic levels that are completely incompatible with today\u2019s civilized society.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-55656\" src=\"https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Kurt.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"294\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is the scenario that <strong>Giuliana Adamo, who is in charge of the #NonunodiTroppo (Too Many Puppies) Project, witnessed with her own eyes during her first inspection of the launch of the <em>Save the Dogs <\/em>initiative in the areas between Cosenza and Crotone.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the course of her travels covering over 1,700 kilometers and learning more about the problem of stray dogs, Giuliana spoke with a number of associations that work every day to find a solution to <strong>a problem that has deep roots in pastoralism and agricultural traditions, one that thrives on the total indifference of the local authorities<\/strong>. The latter prefer quick &#8216;solutions&#8217;, i.e. capturing the dogs and locking them up in kennels, rather than addressing the underlying problem. It is precisely <strong>the state of these kennels that is dramatic in this region, with more than one facility housing over 2,000 caged dogs.<\/strong> This is clearly a completely unacceptable situation. It is very difficult to gain access to these pounds, and the welfare of the confined animals is non-existent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The dogs that Giuliana encountered during her visit were mainly sheep dogs or hunting dogs, <\/strong>left to roam unattended and often abandoned because they were no longer fit to do their job. One such example is Kurt (the dog in the picture), a setter who was terrified by the sound of gunfire and who was therefore abandoned by his owner because he was no longer useful as a hunting dog.<\/p>\n<p>The pivotal turning point for Giuliana was the discovery of two very different realities which share the same degree of seriousness and passion in addressing the problem of stray dogs: namely, the<em> <strong>Associazione Amici <\/strong><\/em><strong><em>Animali FEF<\/em><\/strong> (FEF Animal Friends Association), <strong>which operates in the area of the provinces of Cosenza and Sila, and <\/strong><strong>the <em>Associazione Oasi Argo <\/em><\/strong>(Argo Adoption Association), <strong>a shelter that is home to 230 dogs in the province of Crotone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-55652 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/DSC_8965.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"294\" \/>These are the two partners that <em>Save the Dogs<\/em> has chosen to launch the #Nonunoditroppo (Too Many Puppies) project in Calabria in 2021.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLiving in Catania, I know all too well the sad reality of stray dogs in the South of Italy, but the situation in Calabria has deeply touched me concerning the increasing numbers of stray dogs, due to the ineptitude of the local authorities. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It\u2019s a reality we hear little about but it is another of the many problems this area faces. From the initial investigations we carried out, I knew of the existence of certain realities that have not given up, despite the hostility and difficulties involved, and continue to strive every day to save dogs from a cruel fate. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Amici Animali FEF and Oasi Argo are a confirmation of the professionalism and pragmatic nature with which many small organizations tackle the problem of stray dogs. \u2018\u2019 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The <em>Amici Animali FEF <\/em>Association represents a formidable group of volunteers who work to save dogs belonging to shepherds, farmers and hunters who have been abandoned or left unattended by their owners in the Sila Park area. Alongside their efforts, <em>Save the Dogs<\/em> is going to launch Calabria\u2019s <strong>first mapping program and will carry out a census of stray dogs<\/strong>, using the app provided by the <em>Stray Dogs International Project<\/em>, and thanks to the numerous volunteers of the association who will be trained to complete this mission.<\/p>\n<p>The project also provides for the<strong> sterilization and microchipping of 200 stray and privately-owned dogs<\/strong> carried out at two veterinary clinics located in the two provinces involved in the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Thanks to the expertise of Save the Dogs and to the integrated approach of our interventions (<strong>sterilization, registration, the mapping of stray dogs, sensitization of the owners of the animals towards responsible behavior and pressure on the local authorities<\/strong>), we will be able to provide these realities with the support and the skills they require in order to really make headway in tackling the problem of stray dogs, beginning with their sterilization and conducting a dialogue with the authorities, while creating a culture of general awareness<\/em>.\u2019\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Calabria The story of Save the Dogs&#8217; first inspection of Calabria, where the number of stray dogs has reached alarming levels.Seriously overcrowded pounds, abandoned and stray dogs: the number of stray dogs in Calabria has reached dramatic levels that are completely incompatible with today\u2019s civilized society. Proprio <strong>la situazione dei canili risulta drammatica in questa regione, con pi\u00f9 di una struttura che conta oltre 2.000 cani rinchiusi: <\/strong>una cosa semplicemente folle e inaccettabile. Canili nei quali \u00e8 difficile entrare e dove il benessere degli animali rinchiusi \u00e8 inesistente.<\/p><p><strong>I cani incrociati da Giuliana nel suo viaggio sono per lo pi\u00f9 cani di pastori o cani da caccia<\/strong>, lasciati vagare incustoditi e spesso abbandonati perch\u00e9 inadeguati allo scopo. Ne \u00e8 un esempio Kurt, un setter che aveva paura del rumore degli spari e per questo abbandonato perch\u00e9 non pi\u00f9 utile al cacciatore che lo aveva selezionato per quel determinato scopo.<\/p><p>La svolta nel viaggio \u00e8 stato l\u2019incontro con due realt\u00e0, molto diverse tra loro, ma accomunate dalla stessa seriet\u00e0 e passione con cui affrontano il problema del randagismo.<\/p><p>Da un lato <em>l\u2019<strong>Associazione Amici <\/strong><\/em><strong><em>Animali FEF<\/em><\/strong><strong>, che opera nell\u2019area delle provincie di Cosenza e della Sila, e dall\u2019altro <em>l\u2019Associazione Oasi Argo<\/em>, un rifugio che accoglie 230 cani nella provincia di Crotone<\/strong>.<\/p><p><img class=\"wp-image-55652 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/DSC_8965.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"294\" \/>Questi sono i partner che <em>Save the Dogs<\/em> ha scelto per avviare il progetto <em>#Nonunoditroppo<\/em> in Calabria nel 2021.<\/p><p><em>\"Conosco bene la triste realt\u00e0 del randagismo nel Sud Italia, vivendo a Catania, ma la realt\u00e0 della Calabria mi ha toccata per il randagismo dilagante nell\u2019inettitudine delle istituzioni, una realt\u00e0 di cui si sente parlare poco, ma che si aggiunge ai tanti problemi di questa terra. <\/em><\/p><p><em>Dalle prime indagini fatte, sapevo dell\u2019esistenza di realt\u00e0 virtuose che nonostante le ostilit\u00e0 e le difficolt\u00e0, non si danno per vinte ma lavorano con passione ogni giorno per salvare i cani da un destino crudele. <\/em><\/p><p><em>Amici Animali FEF e Oasi Argo sono la conferma della seriet\u00e0 e della concretezza con cui molte piccole realt\u00e0 affrontano il problema del randagismo. \"<\/em><\/p><p><em><br \/>Amici Animali FEF <\/em>sono un gruppo formidabile di volontari che si adopera per salvare i cani di pastori, contadini e cacciatori che vivono abbandonati o incustoditi dai proprietari nell\u2019area del Parco della Sila. During the course of her travels covering over 1,700 kilometers and learning more about the problem of stray dogs, Giuliana spoke with a number of associations that work every day to find a solution to a problem that has deep roots in pastoralism and agricultural traditions, one that thrives on the total indifference of the local authorities. The latter prefer quick 'solutions', i.e. capturing the dogs and locking them up in kennels, rather than addressing the underlying problem.
