Those who had physically experienced the bombardments were in a state of stress, fear and despair that you could read on their faces, even before you spoke to them\u201d, <\/em>Caterina told us.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBeing in Isaccea has carved a deep furrow in my heart. Being able to offer comfort as opposed to weapons and destruction is well and truly an unforgettably important experience\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Among the countless animals Caterina helped, she particularly remembers Olga\u2019s cat, who arrived in a state of exhaustion after the endless bicycle ride with his owner from Donbas to Isaccea, passing through Mikolayiv and Kiev. Olga is a psychologist who specializes in juvenile issues and, until forced to flee, Olga had provided support for many of the children caught up in the conflict.<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Olga-225x300.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-64354 size-medium alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Olga-225x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Olga-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Olga.png 417w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAt Isaccea, the Save the Dogs volunteers gave Olga and her cat every kind of assistance we possibly could. The cat was able to stretch his legs in a spacious area specially made available for all animals that arrived tired and stressed from their journey (often transported in small carriers or cages, or carried in their owner\u2019s arms, with short leashes and tight collars, in bags, holdalls or squashed into caddies), and was fed and watered.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In the meantime, Olga was able to rest while she was cared for by volunteers from the various humanitarian organizations, all offering precious help: it was a wave of goodness providing care and support wherever it was needed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We then accompanied Olga and her pet to the assisting veterinarians so that they could carry out a medical examination and supply the cat with an international passport, required vaccinations, microchipping, etc. Everything was done that was necessary for the cat&#8217;s well-being.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Last but not least, Save the Dogs provided Olga with a backpack, harness and leash to help her transport her inseparable pet during their ongoing coach ride to Bucharest<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Before getting on the coach, Olga came back specifically to the Save the Dogs station for a final goodbye and to thank the volunteers again for our help. She gave me one of the most affectionate and heartfelt hugs I have ever had. Bon Voyage, Olga, and we hope you are able to return home soon safe and sound<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Help amid the rubble<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Since 24 February, their lives have not been the same. <\/strong>They used to have a job like everyone else, but now they are volunteers in the homeland, caring for people in need and the many abandoned animals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/IMG_20220426_121449-300x222.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-64357  alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/IMG_20220426_121449-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"351\" height=\"260\" \/><\/a>In the areas where fighting is taking place, you have to wear a bulletproof vest when you go out and, as well as the risk of being bombarded, landmines are scattered all over the territory.<\/p>\n<p>None of this, however, deters the many volunteers, who risk their lives every single day taking food and water to the animals who have been abandoned and the thousands of strays who are roaming about in now deserted homes. Those who had physically experienced the bombardments were in a state of stress, fear and despair that you could read on their faces, even before you [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":59,"featured_media":64352,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"on","_et_pb_old_content":"[et_pb_section fb_built=\"1\" fullwidth=\"on\" _builder_version=\"4.9.4\" _module_preset=\"default\"][et_pb_fullwidth_header title=\"Volontari in tempo di guerra\" _builder_version=\"4.9.4\" _module_preset=\"default\"][\/et_pb_fullwidth_header][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=\"1\" _builder_version=\"4.4.1\"][et_pb_row _builder_version=\"4.4.1\"][et_pb_column type=\"4_4\" _builder_version=\"4.4.1\"][et_pb_text _builder_version=\"4.9.4\" text_line_height=\"2em\"]<h4><strong>La solidariet\u00e0 alla frontiera<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n<p>Caterina \u00e8 una degli oltre <strong>40 volontari che dal<\/strong> <strong>15 marzo<\/strong>, con turnazioni settimanali, hanno dedicato il loro tempo e la loro solidariet\u00e0 alle persone in fuga insieme ai loro animali al punto di frontiera di Isaccea.<\/p>\r\n<p>Quando Caterina aveva mandato a <em>Save the Dogs<\/em> la sua disponibilit\u00e0 di volontariato, pensava che avrebbe portato il suo aiuto a Milano, dove abita e vive.<\/p>\r\n<p>Ma quando la guerra \u00e8 iniziata non ha esitato ad accogliere la richiesta di aiuto a supporto dello staff di <em>Save the Dogs<\/em> impegnato dal 4 marzo ad assistere gli animali in fuga con i loro compagni umani dall\u2019Ucraina.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/WhatsApp-Image-2022-04-13-at-15.35.50.jpeg\"><img class=\"alignleft wp-image-64351 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/WhatsApp-Image-2022-04-13-at-15.35.50.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><em>\u201cSono arrivata alla frontiera tra Romania e Ucraina a Isaccea a inizio aprile. <\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><em>Con i traghetti che attraversano il Danubio che divide la Romania dall\u2019Ucraina arrivavano persone provate dal lungo e difficile viaggio attraverso la guerra, soprattutto donne, bambini e anziani alcuni di loro con i propri animali.<br \/><\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><em> Improvvisamente e senza possibilit\u00e0 di scelta avevano lasciato tutto. Chi aveva vissuto i bombardamenti era in uno stato di stress, paura e disperazione che si poteva capire dal volto, senza neanche chiederglielo\u201d, <\/em>racconta Caterina.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>\u201cQuella di Isaccea \u00e8 un'esperienza che ha scavato un profondo solco nel mio cuore. Offrire conforto in opposizione alle armi e alla distruzione \u00e8 davvero un'esperienza che ha un valore altissimo.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>Tra i tanti animali aiutati, Caterina ricorda il gatto di Olga, arrivato sfiancato dalla stanchezza. Aveva fatto un lungo viaggio in bicicletta con la sua padrona iniziato dal Donbass fino ad Isaccea, passando per Mikolayiv e Kiev. Olga \u00e8 una psicologa esperta di problematiche minorili e fino a quando non \u00e8 stata costretta a scappare, ha dato supporto e seguito i tanti bambini coinvolti nel conflitto.<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Olga-225x300.png\"><img class=\"wp-image-64354 size-medium alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Olga-225x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>\u201c<em>A Isaccea noi volontari di Save the Dogs abbiamo dato a lei e al gatto tutto il possibile aiuto, con dedizione e affetto. Il gatto \u00e8 stato fatto sgambare in un\u2019apposita grande area messa a disposizione per tutti gli animali che arrivavano stanchi e stressati dal viaggio (fatto spesso in piccoli trasportini, gabbiette, in braccio, con guinzagli corti e collari stretti, borse, sacchetti, accovacciati sui trolley), ristorato e abbeverato.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><em>Intanto Olga si riposava e veniva accudita dai volontari delle molte organizzazioni umanitarie. Tanti e preziosi: una marea di bene che arriva dove c\u2019\u00e8 bisogno.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><em>In seguito, abbiamo accompagnato Olga e il gatto dai veterinari l\u00e0 presenti per una visita medica, passaporto internazionale, vaccinazioni, microchip ecc. Tutto ci\u00f2 che era necessario al gatto per la sua salute. <\/em><em>Per proseguire il viaggio verso Bucarest, Save the Dogs ha infine fornito a Olga uno zainetto, pettorina e guinzaglio per trasportare agevolmente il suo inseparabile gatto<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>\u201cPrima di salire sul pullman Olga \u00e8 tornata apposta alla tenda di Save the Dogs per un ultimo saluto e per ringraziare nuovamente noi volontari. Uno dei miei abbracci pi\u00f9 affettuosi e dolorosi. When Caterina first contacted Save the Dogs to offer her willingness to volunteer, she imagined that she would be helping from her home and base in Milan. However, when war broke out she did not hesitate to accept the call for help in support of the Save the Dogs staff who had been committed since 4 March to assisting animals fleeing from Ukraine with their human companions. \u201cI arrived at the border between Romania and Ukraine at the beginning of April. Hordes of people, exhausted by the long and difficult journey through war zones, were arriving on ferries that crossed the Danube dividing Romania and Ukraine. They were mostly women, children and elderly people, and many were traveling with their pets, and had had to leave their homes suddenly and with no other options open to them.
