We took him away with us, looked after him and found him a family to live with<\/em>\u201d. This message was sent to us by Tatiana, one of the hundreds of volunteers in Ukraine who, over the past few months, have continued to give food and assistance to the people and animals who have been left behind during the conflict.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-64840 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Sheva-226x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"300\" \/>Sheva the kitten is just a couple of months old, who ended up all alone and trying to survive out on the streets. His expression, which shows his uncertainty about whether or not he can trust anyone, has become for us the symbol of all the animals who were left alone during the war and whom we have been assisting for months via a whole range of interventions.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent of these was led by Adriana Susm\u0103, General Director of our <em>Footprints of Joy<\/em> center, who managed to cross into Ukraine at the end of June. <em>\u201cIt was an impromptu trip to deliver food supplies. We couldn&#8217;t find any transporters, so I said &#8216;OK, I&#8217;ll do it myself\u2019\u201d<\/em>, she recalled as she told us about the days leading up to her trip. Together with two volunteers, Adriana travelled to Izmail in the south of the country, close to the border with Romania, and successfully delivered 48 bags of cat food and 20 bags of dog food, a total of 1,040 kilos of food for the animals. Supplies which were essential for relieving the <em>Mika<\/em> association, which is active in that area.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe worked non-stop for 17 hours\u201d<\/em>, she wrote. \u201c<em>In psychological terms, it was a very intense experience\u201d<\/em>. Her account is a succession of images that will always remain vivid in her memory: <em>\u201cNow I understand why the Ukrainian national flag looks like it does\u201d,<\/em> she continued. <em>\u201cWhile we were driving along the motorway, we passed a virgin expanse of sunflowers, the brightest yellow flowers I have ever seen. And above them was this immense blue sky, perfectly calm and clear\u201d. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-64843 size-medium alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Sheva-2-226x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"300\" \/>Mile after mile, however, this wonderful spectacle gradually made way for the reality: an endless queue of cars entering and leaving the town; sirens suddenly starting to wail; a silent but ever present military presence.<\/p>\n<p>And those puppies. &#8220;<em>We were about to leave Izmail when we spotted them. We immediately went over to feed them, as we still had some food left over. It was a sight for sore eyes: there were lots of mothers with pups all about the same age<\/em>&#8220;, she explained as she took a few minutes to reflect on the scenes she had witnessed.<\/p>\n<p>The expressions in the eyes of those puppies inevitably reminded us of Sheva, and in fact we have been thinking about and discussing the need to start a sterilization and birth control program in Izmail and throughout the whole region. One day, as soon as the situation allows us to do so, we really want to put the idea into practice.<\/p>\n<p>For the time being we will continue to send aid to any and all of the eleven shelters in the south that ask for our help, and together with Adriana we plan to take another delivery to Ukraine. <em>\u201cI\u2019ve no idea what the future holds in store <\/em>\u2013 she concluded \u2013 \u201c<em>but I do know for sure that another 20 tons of food will be leaving here soon. Il suo sguardo, incerto se fidarsi o meno, \u00e8 diventato per noi il simbolo di tutti gli animali che durante la guerra sono rimasti soli e che stiamo aiutando da mesi con una lunga serie di operazioni.<\/p><p>L\u2019ultima \u00e8 stata condotta da Adriana Susm\u0103, direttrice generale del nostro centro <em>Footprints of Joy<\/em>, che a fine giugno \u00e8 riuscita a entrare in Ucraina. <em>\u201c\u00c8 stata una trasferta improvvisata per portare del cibo. Non riuscivamo a trovare un trasportatore quindi mi son detta \u201cok lo faccio io\u2019\u201d<\/em>, ricorda mentre ci racconta le giornate che hanno preceduto il suo viaggio. Adriana, insieme a due volontarie, si \u00e8 recata a Izmail \u2013 a sud del paese, vicino al confine con la Romania \u2013 ed <strong>\u00e8 riuscita a consegnare 48 sacchi di cibo per gatti e 20 sacchi per cani, per un totale di 1.040 chili di cibo<\/strong>. Provviste fondamentali per l\u2019associazione <em>Mika<\/em>, attiva nella zona.<\/p><p><em>\u201cAbbiamo lavorato 17 ore senza mai fermarci\u201d<\/em>, ci scrive. <em>\u201c\u00c8 stato molto intenso psicologicamente\u201d<\/em>. Il suo racconto \u00e8 un susseguirsi di immagini che ancora oggi rimangono vivide nella sua memoria: <em>\u201cOra capisco perch\u00e9 la bandiera ucraina \u00e8 fatta cos\u00ec\u201d,<\/em> prosegue. <em>\u201cMentre viaggiavamo in autostrada abbiamo passato una distesa incontaminata di girasoli, i pi\u00f9 gialli che abbia mai visto. E sopra di loro c\u2019era questo immenso cielo blu, calmo e nitido\u201d. \u00a0<\/em><\/p><p><img class=\"wp-image-64843 size-medium alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Sheva-2-226x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"300\" \/>Chilometro dopo chilometro, questo spettacolo naturale ha per\u00f2 lasciato il posto alla realt\u00e0: la coda interminabile di macchine per entrare e uscire dal paese; le sirene che iniziano a suonare all\u2019improvviso; la presenza dei militari, silenziosa ma costante.<\/p><p>E i<strong> cuccioli<\/strong>. <em>\u201cStavamo per lasciare Izmail, quando li abbiamo visti. Ci siamo immediatamente fermati per aiutarli e dare loro da mangiare, dato che ci avanzava ancora un sacco di cibo. \u00c8 stato impressionante: c\u2019erano moltissime femmine con dei cuccioli pi\u00f9 o meno della stessa et\u00e0\u201d<\/em>, ci spiega mentre si concede qualche minuto per riflette sulla scena a cui ha assistito.<\/p><p>Gli occhi di quei cuccioli ci ricordano inevitabilmente quelli di Sheva e ci ritroviamo a pensare e a parlare di <strong>quanto sarebbe necessario avviare un programma di sterilizzazioni e controllo delle nascite, a Izmail e in tutta la regione<\/strong>. Un giorno, quando la situazione ce lo permetter\u00e0, vogliamo farlo.<\/p><p>Per il momento <strong>continuiamo a inviare aiuti a tutti i rifugi del sud che ci chiedono aiuto (sono 11)<\/strong> e insieme ad Adriana pianifichiamo un\u2019altra consegna diretta in Ucraina. <em>\u201cNon so cosa ci riservi il futuro<\/em> \u2013 conclude \u2013. <em>Ma so per certo che presto partiranno altre 20 tonnellate di cibo. Sheva the kitten is just a couple of months old, who ended up all alone and trying to survive out on the streets.
