\"\"<\/em><\/span>Footprints of Freedom<\/em> is a 1,500 sqm facility we have built within our Footprints of Joy<\/em> center in Cernavoda in Romania. It is divided into three 500-square-metre enclosures which house residents at our facility that cannot be put up for adoption.<\/p>\n

This area is intended for dogs that have experienced severe difficulties in the past and have been damaged by severe maltreatment or trauma that is so profound that they cannot be adopted by a family. None of these animals allow us to touch them or agree to wear a harness. Many completely refuse any human contact at all and just being close to people causes them deep discomfort. It is for this reason that they need a dedicated space where they can enjoy a quiet life.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

How did the transfer of these elderly dogs to Footprints of Freedom<\/em> go?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In July last year, we launched a fundraiser to allow us to build this new area, and thanks to your generous support we were able to start work on the project immediately. Back in early January 2023, we began moving the first group of dogs to their new homes. We started with the youngest animals, gradually evaluating each individual placement, monitoring their reactions and preferences.<\/p>\n

This month we have started moving older dogs, like Zeus, who has been living with us for many years now. We first rescued him from the Ovidiu dog pound, which is notorious for the terrible things that have happened within its walls, after he had been taken there by dog catchers. He was badly traumatized by these two dramatic experiences, and it took a long time before he began to trust us again.<\/p>\n

Nowadays, Zeus tolerates our presence in his enclosure. He loves the rewards we give him and the company of other dogs, but \u2013 as is very often the case with dogs with his history \u2013 he refuses to be touched and it is impossible for us to handle him in any way. We know that living with a family would not be the most suitable solution for him at all.<\/p>\n

A new life for Zeus at Footprints of Freedom<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n

When Zeus first stepped into Footprints of Freedom<\/em>, however, we immediately knew that living here was going to be the perfect solution for him. He went around sniffing the whole enclosure and then promptly rolled around on the grass for an age. We had never seen him do anything like that before!<\/p>\n

Today he shares his days with Dewey, with whom he relaxes in the sunshine and soaks up the fresh spring air. Our hearts rejoice to see them running around together every now and then.<\/p>\n

\"\"Impronte Libere<\/em><\/span> \u00e8 un\u2019area di 1.500 mq che abbiamo realizzato all\u2019interno del nostro rifugio Footprints of Joy<\/em><\/span> a Cernavoda, in Romania. \u00c8 divisa in tre recinti da 500mq nei quali abbiamo suddiviso alcuni degli ospiti della nostra struttura che non possono essere adottati.<\/p>

Si tratta di cani che hanno un passato difficile, segnato da gravi maltrattamenti o da traumi cos\u00ec profondi da impedire un\u2019adozione in famiglia. Nessuno di loro ci consente di manipolarli o accetta di indossare una pettorina. Molti rifiutano completamente il contatto umano e la sola vicinanza con le persone provoca un profondo disagio. Per questo necessitavano di uno spazio dedicato in cui potessero vivere in serenit\u00e0.<\/p>

Com\u2019\u00e8 andato lo spostamento dei cani anziani a Impronte Libere<\/b><\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

A luglio dello scorso anno abbiamo aperto una raccolta fondi per creare questo spazio e il vostro generoso aiuto ci ha consentito di iniziare subito i lavori. Gi\u00e0 dai primi giorni di gennaio, abbiamo cominciato a spostare i primi cani nelle loro nuove case. Siamo partiti dagli individui pi\u00f9 giovani e man mano abbiamo valutato ogni inserimento, monitorando le loro reazioni e preferenze.<\/p>

Questo mese abbiamo iniziato a spostare i cani pi\u00f9 anziani, come il nostro Zeus che ormai \u00e8 da noi da tanti anni. L\u2019avevamo salvato dal canile lager di Ovidiu, tristemente noto per quello che accadeva dentro le sue mura, dopo che era stato portato l\u00ec dai catturatori. Queste due esperienze drammatiche l\u2019hanno traumatizzato e ci \u00e8 voluto tantissimo lavoro prima che ricominciasse a fidarsi di noi.<\/p>

Zeus oggi tollera la nostra presenza nel suo box, adora i premi che gli diamo e la compagnia degli altri cani, ma \u2013 come molto spesso accade a cani con il suo passato \u2013 non accetta di farsi toccare e ci \u00e8 impossibile manipolarlo. Una vita in famiglia, per lui, non sarebbe la soluzione pi\u00f9 adatta.<\/p>

La nuova vita di Zeus a Impronte Libere<\/b><\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

Quando ha messo piede a Impronte Libere<\/em><\/span> per\u00f2, abbiamo capito subito che questa sarebbe stata la soluzione perfetta per lui. Ha annusato tutto il recinto e poi si \u00e8 rotolato a lungo sull\u2019erba. Non l\u2019avevamo mai visto cos\u00ec!<\/p>

Oggi condivide le sue giornate con Dewey con cui si rilassa al sole e si gode l\u2019aria primaverile. Ci riempie il cuore di gioia vederli accennare delle piccole corse di tanto in tanto.<\/p>

Nulla di tutto questo sarebbe stato possibile senza di voi!<\/p>
