Celebrities that have social media profiles with millions of followers are making these kinds of animal all the rage, sparking a huge trend in copycat behavior.<\/p>\n<p>But what is it that all these animals have in common? They all belong to the brachycephalic species, that is to say, they are breeds that have significantly shortened heads, with short snouts and flattened faces. These characteristics are the result of genetic selection and serve only one purpose: they satisfy popular aesthetic criteria, resulting in increased sales.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-69841\" src=\"https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Copia-di-Storie-brachicefali1.png\" alt=\"Il bulldog francese \u00e8 uno degli animali brachicefali\" width=\"198\" height=\"352\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Brachycephalic animals can experience major health problems<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em>&#8220;Brachycephalic breeds, selected because they keep their puppylike expressions throughout their entire lives and have features that seem just like those of humans, are considered by veterinarians all over the world to be likely to face the greatest difficulties in leading a normal life,&#8221; comments Ermanno Giudici, an expert on these issues who has been monitoring the issue of genetic abuse for many years. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Many of these animals lead a miserable existence, as witnessed firsthand by the medical profession, because thousands of these animals need major interventions in order to survive and some even require plastic surgery to allow them to breathe properly.&#8221; <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Cats and dogs with significantly shortened skulls frequently have a reduced quality of life due to the development of breathing problems caused by anatomical abnormalities (their nostrils are too narrow, they suffer from defects in the palates), and can also experience eye trauma, dermatitis and heart disease. These are serious medical pathologies that have led certain countries such as the Netherlands and Norway to ban the breeding of some of these breeds, whose demand has grown exponentially everywhere because of the influence of social media.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;8%||||false|false&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Brachycephalic animals are being exhibited as fashion accessories<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em>&#8220;Despite the obvious health problems afflicting these breeds, their popularity does not seem to be diminishing. On the contrary, the superficial flaunting and exhibition of these animals by VIPs and celebrities on their social channels is having the opposite effect and is escalating the demand for these types of cats and dogs, mindless of all the suffering it can produce.<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Anyone and everyone who has an effect on the general public and can inspire the consumer behavior patterns of millions of people has to be aware of the consequences of everything they choose to communicate. Animals cannot and should not be treated like fashion accessories. These creatures have their own rights too, and it is vital to raise awareness of their condition whenever they appear on social media, which can also be a way to receive more \u2018likes\u2019 and comments on these posts\u201d, <\/em>says Save the Dogs President Sara Turetta.<\/p>\n<p>The media exposure of certain animal breeds has also led to a growth in the number of amateur breeders who are totally unsupervised and who are fueling the illegal trade in puppies arriving from Eastern European countries, precisely to meet this growing demand.<\/p>\n<p>Sara Turetta concludes: &#8220;<em>As well as VIPs and influencers, other forms of media such as film or advertising where brachycephalic or other &#8220;extreme&#8221; breeds often play a starring part have a decisive role in raising awareness. A self-regulatory policy code is required to demonstrate the effect of what a post or photo can generate. Profili con milioni di followers che inevitabilmente rendono queste razze di gran moda, innescando comportamenti di emulazione. L\u2019ultimo in ordine di tempo ad esporre il proprio quattrozampe \u00e8 Gianni Morandi, che nei giorni scorsi si \u00e8 fatto immortalare su Instagram con un gattino di razza british shorthair, facendo letteralmente impazzire i suoi fan.<\/p><p>Ma cosa hanno in comune tutti questi animali? Appartengono alla categoria dei brachicefali, cio\u00e8 a quelle razze in cui il muso risulta schiacciato e il cranio tondo, caratteristiche somatiche frutto di una selezione genetica che ha un unico scopo: rispondere a canoni estetici che piacciono e che quindi incrementano le vendite.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><img class=\"alignleft wp-image-69841\" src=\"https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Copia-di-Storie-brachicefali1.png\" alt=\"Il bulldog francese \u00e8 uno degli animali brachicefali\" width=\"198\" height=\"352\" \/><\/p><p><strong>Gli animali brachicefali posso avere grossi problemi di salute<\/strong><\/p><p>\u201cSono proprio le razze brachicefale, selezionate per assomigliare a eterni cuccioli con sembianze \u201cumane\u201d, che secondo i veterinari di tutto il mondo hanno i maggiori problemi a condurre una vita normale\u201d commenta Ermanno Giudici, esperto di queste problematiche che da tempo segue la questione del maltrattamento genetico.<\/p><p>\u201cL\u2019esistenza di molti di questi animali \u00e8 penosa e i medici ne sono i primi testimoni, perch\u00e9 sono migliaia gli animali che hanno bisogno di cure importanti per poter sopravvivere, quando non addirittura di interventi di chirurgia plastica per poter respirare\u201d.<\/p><p>La brachicefalia comporta una ridotta qualit\u00e0 della vita per cani e gatti a causa dei problemi respiratori dovuti alle anomalie anatomiche (narici troppo strette, difetti al palato), ma determina anche traumi agli occhi, dermatiti e cardiopatie.<\/p><p>Patologie gravi, che hanno portato alcuni Paesi come l\u2019Olanda e la Norvegia a vietare gli allevamenti di alcune di queste razze, la cui domanda \u00e8 cresciuta ovunque in modo esponenziale proprio grazie ai social media e agli influencer.<\/p><p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=\"4.9.4\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_margin=\"8%||||false|false\"]<\/p><p><strong>Animali brachicefali ancora esibiti come accessori di moda<\/strong><\/p><p>\u201cNonostante i problemi di salute che coinvolgono queste razze, la loro popolarit\u00e0 non sembra destinata a diminuire, anzi: i VIP, esibendoli con superficialit\u00e0 sui propri canali social, non fanno che aumentare questo fenomeno, con tutte le sofferenze che esso produce. Chi raggiunge il grande pubblico e ispira i consumi di milioni di persone deve essere consapevole delle conseguenze di ci\u00f2 che comunica: gli animali non possono essere trattati alla stregua di accessori di moda. Sono creature portatrici di diritti e serve maggiore consapevolezza e preparazione quando vengono mostrati, magari proprio per aumentare i like e le interazioni\u201d, commenta la presidente di <em>Save the Dogs<\/em>, Sara Turetta.<\/p><p>L\u2019esposizione mediatica di alcune razze ha determinato una crescita di allevamenti amatoriali totalmente privi di controllo, che vanno ad alimentare il traffico illegale di cuccioli in arrivo dai paesi dell\u2019Est Europa, proprio per far fronte ad una domanda crescente.<\/p><p>\u201cOltre a Vip e influencer, hanno un ruolo determinante anche altri media come il cinema o la pubblicit\u00e0, dove i brachicefali o altre razze \u201cestreme\u201d sono spesso le protagoniste. Serve un codice di autoregolamentazione per avere consapevolezza di quello che un post o una foto possono generare.
