It was <strong>the sound of her yelps<\/strong> which could be clearly heard above the noise of cars passing nearby that attracted our attention. When we saw her, we understood what she was doing there.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The moment we saw Wendy<br \/><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Wendy was suffering from a <strong>terrible eye injury,<\/strong> and we could see that half of her snout was compromised. After several attempts to rescue her, we managed to transport her to our clinic, where we gave her a thorough examination and performed emergency surgery on her.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_71185\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71185\" class=\"wp-image-71185 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Foto-sito2-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-71185\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The moment we saw Wendy<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Nothing is known about her past, how she came to be at that precipice, or what had caused such serious injuries. The only possible clue was the <strong>burn mark on her muzzle<\/strong> that is typically seen on many Romanian dogs: there is still a popular tradition, particularly in the countryside, which says that burning dogs&#8217; muzzles with a hot iron helps protect them against distemper. <strong>This is in fact a myth with no scientific basis<\/strong> that we have been fighting for years.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Wendy&#8217;s life at our shelter<br \/><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Wendy had to endure a <strong>lengthy program of physical rehabilitation<\/strong> that has enabled her to make a full recovery. Today she shares a kennel with Benjamin, and their mutual friendship has done them both a lot of good.<\/p>\n<p>What she now needs is <strong>behavioral support to overcome the psychological trauma<\/strong> she has experienced. That is why our educators have started working with her and are helping her to develop new skills and gain more self-confidence.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_71189\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71189\" class=\"wp-image-71189 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Foto-sito1-300x169.png\" alt=\"Family Footprints will speed up the adoption process of our dogs\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-71189\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Family Footprints will speed up the adoption process of our dogs<\/p><\/div>\n<p>However, we are now keen to do more. What is still missing in our shelter is a space to <strong>accustom our dogs to a homely environment<\/strong>, so that they are gradually introduced to spaces, noises, and movements that they are most likely unfamiliar with.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Family Footprints will speed up the adoption process of our dogs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>All this is going to be possible at \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/en\/family-footprints\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Home from Home<\/strong><\/a>\u2019, the new area we are building to prepare our animals for adoption more quickly. This space will consist of a new playground specially equipped to allow the animals to enjoy new experiences, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/en\/family-footprints\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>real life room<\/em><\/a>, i.e. a room that simulates the living room of a family home.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70850\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70850\" class=\"wp-image-70850 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.savethedogs.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/STANZA_ENG-300x177.png\" alt=\"This is how we imagine Family Footprints\" width=\"300\" height=\"177\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-70850\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is how we imagine Family Footprints<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Inside, they will discover all the elements to be found in a living room: a sofa, curtains, carpets and chairs, all of which are <strong>objects and materials unknown to dogs<\/strong> who were previously living on the streets.<\/p>\n<p>In this way, our educators will be able to work with the animals to <strong>prevent the onset of new fears or phobias<\/strong> and prepare them for the environments they will find once they arrive with their adoptive families.<\/p>\n<p>Wendy&#8217;s journey is still a long one, but we hope that a space like this will help her forget that ravine more quickly and <strong>understand what awaits her once she leaves our shelter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We found Wendy abandoned in a ravine in Cernavoda, Romania.
