Fausto \u00e8 entrato nelle nostre vite in punta di piedi. Quando l\u2019abbiamo trovato era rannicchiato a fianco di un negozio<\/strong><\/a> di Cernavoda, in Romania. Alcuni passanti ce l\u2019avevano segnalato, attirati anche loro dal modo in cui era raggomitolato su s\u00e9 stesso, come a volersi nascondere<\/strong>. All\u2019inizio rifiutava anche solo di guardarci negli occhi e nemmeno il gustoso pat\u00e9 che gli stavamo offrendo sembrava convincerlo a fidarsi di noi. Poi qualcosa \u00e8 cambiato.<\/p>\n

I primi giorni a Footprints of Joy<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Pur non sapendo nulla di certo del suo passato, abbiamo sospettato fin da subito che fosse stato abbandonato<\/strong>. Il modo in cui si comportava, il luogo in cui l\u2019abbiamo trovato e le sue condizioni generali non erano quelle di un cane abituato a sopravvivere in strada.<\/p>\n

Con molta pazienza (e molto pat\u00e9), siamo riusciti a farlo alzare e a convincerlo a mangiare qualcosa. Poi \u00e8 entrato spontaneamente nel trasportino che avevamo preparato per lui e l\u2019abbiamo subito portato nella nostra clinica<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dopo i normali controlli veterinari con cui ci siamo accertati che non avesse problemi di salute, l\u2019abbiamo portato nella sua camera e gli abbiamo lasciato qualche giorno per riprendersi.<\/p>\n

Fausto ha ritrovato s\u00e9 stesso<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In questi momenti ci siamo impegnati per costruire un rapporto di fiducia con lui<\/strong> e mostrargli che non aveva nulla da temere. Abbiamo passato giorni semplicemente seduti sul lettino della sua camera<\/strong> per dargli modo di conoscerci, di abituarsi al nostro odore, ai gesti delle mani, al tono della voce.<\/p>\n

Non ci \u00e8 voluto molto prima che quello sguardo da eterno cucciolo<\/strong> conquistasse tutto il personale del nostro centro. E cos\u00ec Fausto ha avuto modo di conoscere persone nuove, di annusare nuovi spazi, fino al giorno in cui \u00e8 stato pronto per mettere pettorina e guinzaglio e uscire alla scoperta del mondo.<\/p>\n

Settimana dopo settimana, l\u2019abbiamo visto ritrovare la fiducia in s\u00e9 stesso<\/strong>, affrontare nuove attivit\u00e0 con sempre pi\u00f9 coraggio, imparare a relazionarsi con le persone e con gli altri ospiti del nostro rifugio.<\/p>\n

Fino a quando \u00e8 arrivato il messaggio che speravamo di ricevere: una persona in Italia era interessata ad adottarlo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

L\u2019adozione in Italia<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Fausto \u00e8 stato accolto dallo staff italiano in un pomeriggio di settembre<\/strong> <\/a>e accompagnato poco dopo tra le braccia della sua nuova famiglia. Nel momento in cui \u00e8 sceso dal furgone l\u2019emozione ha avuto il sopravvento per tutti ed \u00e8 stata una bellissima conclusione per una storia cos\u00ec speciale<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Nessuno dei dipendenti milanesi l\u2019aveva mai incontrato, ma \u00e8 stato come se l\u2019avessero sempre conosciuto. E lo stesso \u00e8 stato con la sua nuova famiglia che l\u2019ha accolto in un abbraccio rassicurante<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Qualche giorno dopo abbiamo ricevuto le sue prime foto a casa<\/strong>. Il suo sguardo \u00e8 cambiato ancora e non possiamo che salutarlo per l\u2019ultima volta, colmi di gratitudine per il percorso fatto insieme.<\/p>\n

Last July, Lombardy amended Regional Law No. 33 of 2009 in an effort to combat the serious problem of organized begging involving the exploitation of animals. The change was called for by a group of animal welfare organizations in the region.<\/p>\n

Previously, the ban on begging with animals<\/strong> applied only to cases involving puppies or animals that were ill or suffering. Under the amendment, the ban has been extended to include any animal<\/strong>, regardless of its age or state of health.<\/p>\n

But the amendment has an important consequence that appears to have been overlooked: it does not distinguish between people who exploit animals for begging and people <\/strong>experiencing homelessness or severe hardship who share a genuine bond with their dog <\/strong>and care for them responsibly.<\/p>\n

Since 2021, our Friends on the Streets<\/em> project has been supporting people living on the streets in Milan with their pets, providing them with food, essential supplies, and basic veterinary care.<\/p>\n

As soon as news of the new legislation began to spread, many of the people we support shared their concerns with us: above all, they were afraid that their dogs might be taken away from them.<\/p>\n

Faced with the very real possibility that well-loved, well-cared-for dogs supported by our Street Unit could be placed in shelters<\/strong>, we have reached out to the relevant authorities \u2013 the Municipality, Municipal Police, Animal Welfare Officers, and the local health authority (ATS) \u2013 and asked them to meet with us to discuss how the negative consequences of these new rules could be addressed<\/strong>. In particular, we have proposed an exemption being considered for people who receive regular support from our Street Unit and who can be identified by carrying a dedicated ID card.<\/p>\n

Discussions with ATS and the Lombardy Region are still ongoing, and we will keep you updated on any developments.<\/p>\n
