Thousands of people fleeing from the war have found themselves on the run, rushing to get away as fast as they can and taking their animals with them, wedging pets inside their jackets, carrying them in plastic bags or transporting them in hastily improvised cat and dog carriers.
Those who make it across the border, however, are still far from arriving at a safe haven and will have to continue their journey via train, bus or plane in the quest of a secure destination.
In order to be able to take their animals with them, they need a basic but essential item in the form of a pet carrier, without which their onward journey would be impossible.

Yeva reached the border of Isaccea a few days ago. Her mistress had brought her with her from Odessa, carrying her all the way. When they arrived after 30 hours of non-stop travel, they were both tired and frightened. We welcomed them with food and shelter and gave them a cat carrier so they could continue their journey together towards safety.

LEAVING NO ONE BEHIND AT THE BORDER
At the fixed station that we have set up at Isaccea on the border between Romania and Ukraine, our team continues to hand out essential goods every day, including pet carriers, waterproof blankets, leashes and food, as well as providing information enabling the refugees to carry on with their travels and reach a safe haven.
We have also started distributing pet carriers at Bucharest airport. Save the Dogs will welcome them at their shelter at Cernavoda in Romania.
