Microchip Day in Rogliano

A day of protection for our four-legged friends and the prevention of stray animals
Microchip Day 2025

Microchip Day 2025

On Saturday 22 June, Microchip Day was hosted in Rogliano (in Cosenza). This day of micro-chipping for pets offered for free was organized by Save the Dogs in partnership with the Municipality of Rogliano and the local ‘Amici Animali di F&F’ association. The initiative is part of the “door to door” micro-chipping project that was launched in January 2025 and is aimed at combating stray animals and promoting responsible pet ownership.

Throughout the event, a veterinarian provided free micro-chipping and registration of the dogs with the Regional Canine Registry, enabling citizens to have an easy and accessible way to comply with the law. The community’s response was positive, demonstrating that when institutions work closely with local communities and propose practical solutions, participation increases and leads to positive outcomes.

The project stems from the recognition that, in Southern Italy in particular, there is still strong resistance to mandatory micro-chipping, a procedure often not put into practice due to a lack of awareness, cultural barriers, or logistical challenges. To address these issues, a comprehensive approach has been developed, combining public events like Microchip Day and a door-to-door service in the more remote areas of Rogliano.

Micro-chipping, territorial control, sterilization, and ensuring animals are properly cared for are the fundamental elements of any successful strategy to prevent stray animals. Focusing on prevention is essential because animal shelters – especially in Southern Italy – are on the verge of collapse, full to capacity with dogs that are rarely suitable for adoption. Even in the North, where the situation was previously more manageable, adoptions are slowing down, and spaces are becoming ever more difficult to find.

The only way to prevent thousands of animals from spending their lives in cages is to address the root cause by fostering a culture of responsibility, identification, and birth control. In this effort, municipalities and regional authorities play a vital role alongside associations: they must not only enforce the law but also back up concrete projects that make it easier to access services and promote good practices by the public.

Microchip Day in Rogliano serves as a great example of how collaboration between public institutions and associations can bring about meaningful change in the local community. Protecting animals also involves moments like this, which help strengthen the bond between people and their four-legged companions, fostering a more caring, conscious, and respectful environment.
