Heartworm day

Free preventive treatment for dogs of people experiencing homelessness

For people living on the streets, the cost of heartworm prevention is prohibitive.

To address this need, the first “Heartworm Day” was held on Thursday, April 9, in front of the Opera San Francesco soup kitchen in Milan. Volunteer veterinarians and volunteers from Save the Dogs’ Street Unit administered heartworm prevention medication to 9 dogs, ensuring they can enjoy a safe summer.

Heartworm disease is a parasitic illness transmitted by mosquitoes and is potentially fatal. It is endemic in the Po Valley, and dogs belonging to homeless people, who live outdoors day and night, are particularly at risk.

Prevention must be carried out before summer, generally in April.

The second “Heartworm Day” was held on April 24, once again in front of the entrance to the soup kitchen and day services of Opera San Francesco, to reach dogs belonging to people not yet reached by our street team.
