Breeding, identification and the sale of cats and dogs: a new platform is born

27 EU member states, each with their own legislation on breeding, identification and the sale of cats and dogs. Fragmented legislation at the expense of the animals concerned.

The EU Dog & Cat Alliance, a consortium of 96 European associations, including Save the Dogs, has therefore launched the #DrawYourOwnConclusions campaign along with an extremely useful digital tool. The platform, presented to senior representatives of the European Commission and Parliament during a webinar and accessible to the public, highlights in just a few clicks the most ‘virtuous’ states, those with similar legislations or highly inadequate ones, and pinpoints the inevitable gap between northern European countries and those in the south and east.

It also outlines the demands the alliance is making for changes in legislation to combat overbreeding and the smuggling of puppies, a multi-million-dollar business that causes enormous suffering for millions of animals.
