“Dog killing” scandal

Seizures and raids in Romania

Following the release of images from the Suraia dog shelter, operated by Vetmedan srl, other facilities run by unscrupulous companies have been raided and seized by authorities.

Among these is the shelter run by ASPA Istrate Vets, a company based in Uzunu, near Giurgiu, which euthanizes tens of thousands of abandoned animals each year, generating revenue of several million euros. Following the irregularities discovered, nearly 300 dogs were entrusted to animal welfare organizations, many of them in dire health, while the facility was temporarily seized.

It is unclear whether these actions – widely publicized in the national media by the authorities – are intended to quell the controversy surrounding the “kennel mafia” exposed by the investigative platform Snoop.ro, or whether they signal a genuine desire to halt the criminal activities of these entities. Meanwhile, the legislative review process remains stalled in the Senate committees.
